Recently, the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China and the National Radio and Television Administration jointly issued a notice announcing the selection results for the 2024 "Audio-Visual China Global Broadcast" event. Following expert reviews and on-site evaluations, a total of 22 outstanding works, 21 shortlisted works, 10 exemplary promotion activities, and 10 exceptional promotion institutions were selected. Among them, the AI mini series Mei Hou Wang (The Monkey King) was recognized as an outstanding work in the "Short Video Mini Series" category.

As the first AI-generated video exceeding 60 minutes in both domestic and international markets, the AI mini series Mei Hou Wang is based on the first seven chapters of Xi You Ji (Journey to the West). The series is narrated from the perspective of the Victorious Fighting Buddha, who reflects on his growth journey in flashbacks, infusing the classic story with new dramatic tension. Since its release, the series has received enthusiastic responses, with its cumulative online exposure surpassing 180 million views. A version with both Chinese and English subtitles has also been launched on mainstream international platforms, further showcasing the global influence of Chinese culture in international communication.

On October 30, the first space sci-fi-themed mini series Wo Zai Yue Qiu Dang Bao Gong Tou (Building on the Moon) was officially launched on the Hongguo Short Drama platform. The series centers around the creative concept of "lunar infrastructure," integrating aerospace technology and engineering knowledge into the plot. It presents the practical challenges and human warmth of life on a "lunar construction site" in a lighthearted and engaging way. Drawing inspiration from the Chinese people's millennia-old fascination with the moon and contemporary aerospace achievements, Wo Zai Yue Qiu Dang Bao Gong Tou takes "lunar engineering" as its entry point. Instead of following the traditional themes of interstellar wars or alien encounters, it presents a lighthearted comedic style centered around the theme of "Infrastructure Maniac on the Moon."

The science-based fitness-themed mini series Shou Wo Jian Fei Mi Ji, Gu Ren Bei Wo Juan Ku Le (With Weight Loss Secrets, I Drove the Ancients Crazy) officially wrapped filming on November 3. This work is an innovative response to the "Sports with Mini Series" creation plan launched by the General Office of the State Council, the General Administration of Sport of China, and the National Radio and Television Administration. It is also the first domestic mini series focusing on science-based fitness guidance. Centered around the theme of "science-based fitness," the series stars Olympic gymnastics champion Guan Chenchen and world wushu (martial arts) champion Mao Yaqi. Through humor and insight, the series guides audiences to reflect on the importance of a healthy lifestyle.

From "Watchable" to "Enjoyable": AIGC Mini Series Must Keep Striving

With technological iterations and broader application across the industry, AI-generated audiovisual content has generally reached a level that is "watchable" and "acceptable." However, the challenge of transitioning from "watchable" to "enjoyable" remains for both industry and creators.

For industry stakeholders, it is essential to quickly move away from a fast-consumption mindset, effectively integrate relevant resources, and proactively establish production relationships that align with new AIGC productivity. In February of this year, the National Radio and Television Administration issued the Notice on Further Balancing Development and Security to Promote the Healthy and Prosperous Development of the Online Mini Series Industry, advocating for the exploration of deep integration between mini series creation and technologies such as artificial intelligence, as well as formats like online literature and online games. Many institutions and platforms have also introduced AIGC incentive policies.

For creators, facing highly uncertain models and algorithms, it is necessary to break free from technological obsession and explore effective paths to elevate artistic quality and cultural value. The more proficient creators become in using AI tools, the more essential it is to remind themselves to discover and capture inspiration from vivid life experiences, rather than merely reproducing formulaic patterns derived solely from vast data assets.
